Purple Kale Kitchenworks Events

 Events at Purple Kale Kitchenworks

Our studios are in the heart of wonderfully diverse Sunset Park, just south of Industry City, in a converted old box factory near the waterfront, with 16-inch wide old factory beams, original brick walls, 14- foot ceilings, and huge windows that flood the space with natural light and offer an industrial cityscape view. The Chef’s Studio is where cooking happens and where guests and chefs interact. The Parlor is where we host most of our performances, as well as pour cocktails, play music, and serve smaller, seated meals.

A Tamalada!

featuring guest chef Angele Moyseos, Austin, Texas

Tamales are a traditional Mexican specialty. Every Mexican and Mexican-American home has its own recipe. In this class, we will have our own tamalada, making dozens of tamales together from scratch. At the end of class, you’ll take home a batch for your own table.

Angele has been making tamales since 1997, when she opened her first nationally-renowned tamale shop in her Texas hometown. In addition to the traditional pork, Angele’s fillings included non-traditional premium ingredients, such as wild mushroom and goat cheese, beef tenderloin, and smoked chicken.  Our Purple Kale Kitchenworks tamalada will have pork and vegetarian options, alongside music and drinks.

One Twinkly Night (of storytelling!)

Twinkly nights – you know, the kind with long tables, good stories, great people, and ample platters of delicious food – are the best kind of nights.

Stories on Hudson founder Meredith Phillips and Chef Ronna Welsh both love food and words and for this event, they pair up to bring you One Twinkly Night – an all-in-one pop-up event which brings storytelling and dinner together.

Arrive, grab a drink, chat, and find a seat in the story parlor – next to the Purple Kale Kitchenworks studio. Over the course of an hour, each of five storytellers will get up to share a story from their lives. The theme is WHOOPS! : stories of things that might have gone ... better.  Prepare to laugh, cringe, and possibly cry.

Afterwards, the bar will stay open so that storytellers can mingle with their guests. At around 8 pm, those joining us for dinner will move on to a cozy, family-style meal next door.

Everyday Scratch Sourdough Bread

Master baker Christina Ermilio (She Wolf Bakery) makes wondrous bread. In this class, she’ll teach you the technical skills and no-compromise strategies to make mind-blowing sourdough. You’ll learn how to feed and maintain a sourdough starter (from one of her very own strains!), and how to scale, mix, shape, proof, score, and bake a sourdough loaf at home, by hand. As important, you’ll learn strategies for bringing the bread-making process into your daily life. In addition to a thorough instructional booklet, you’ll take home your own sourdough starter, proofing basket, and ready-to-bake loaf.

Christina is one of a handful of select guest instructors at Purple Kale Kitchenworks. When she isn’t managing the bakery and its many market stalls or arranging events for Slow Food NYC, she can be spotted carting a full bag of fresh-baked bread on her back.
